What is Screeding?

A screed is essentially a mixture of sand, cement, and aggregate that you apply on floors to get a smooth, levelled surface.

Screeding serves as a base under the final floor finish. For instance, a tiled surface could have screeding underneath.

But, before getting started with floor screeding, a surveyor might require to take measurements of the property.

This is to find out the required screed level.

Difference Between Screed and Concrete

Often, people tend to confuse screed with concrete. While both are made of similar materials, they serve different purposes.

Here is the main difference between a screed and concrete:

A screed has smaller aggregates in the sand, cement, and aggregate mixture. So, it’s mostly used to lay smooth surfaces.

When it comes to application, concrete mainly serves as a stronger alternative to screed. Whereas, when finishing is the main goal, builders use screed.

The Screeding Process

Dividing your area: First, you need to divide your floor into several sections. Straight pieces of timber are often used for this purpose.

Applying the screed: Then, you apply a layer of screed using a trowel. Using different tools, you can then move the mixture and compact it.

Poor compaction is one of the most common problems in screeding. So, it’s a better idea to have a professional floor screeding service do it for you.

Levelling: If your screed is not self-levelling, you’d have to use a tool like straight timber to level the floor.

Repeating the process: Next, you repeat the process for all the sections, remove the timber dividers, and fill the gaps.

Floating the screed: You’ll then have to remove any imperfections in your screed after installing it.

Curing the screed: After applying the screed, you typically wait for a few days before the floor can be used.

The time a screed takes to cure depends on its type. Some screeds cure within 48 hours.

Letting the floor dry: Lastly, you just need to leave the floor and let it dry. Avoid heavy traffic and installing another layer of flooring for several weeks.
